HEMATOLOGY / ONCOLOGY

Hematology is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the blood and bone marrow as well as of the immunologic, hemostatic, and vascular systems. Because of the nature of blood, the science of hematology profoundly affects the understanding of many diseases.

Chemotherapy is a category of cancer treatment that uses chemical substances, especially one or more anti-cancer drugs Traditional chemotherapeutic agents are cytotoxic, that is to say they act by killing cells that divide rapidly, one of the main properties of most cancer cells.

Using Targeted Therapy, some newer anticancer drugs are not indiscriminately cytotoxic, but rather target proteins that are abnormally expressed in cancer cells and that are essential for their growth. These treatments often used alongside traditional chemotherapeutic agents in antineoplastic treatment regimens.

INFUSIONS

Intravenous or IV chemo is administered into the bloodstream through a tiny, tube called a catheter. A needle is used to put the catheter into a vein in your forearm or hand; then the needle is taken out, leaving the catheter behind.

Intravenous drugs are given in these ways:

  • IV push: the drugs can be given quickly through the catheter right from a syringe over a few minutes.

  • IV infusion: a typical infusion can last from a few minutes to a few hours. A mixed drug solution flows from a plastic bag through tubing that’s attached to the catheter. The flow is usually controlled by a machine called an IV pump.

  • Continuous infusion: These infusions can last anywhere from 1 to several days and are controlled by electronic IV pumps.

PET/CT IMAGING

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans show metabolic changes occurring at the cellular level in an organ or tissue. This is important because disease often begins at the cellular level. We offer axumin and Ga68 PET/CT with an increased accuracy and high specificity for bone, lymph nodes and visceral organ metastasis.

Preparing for your PET scan

Computed Tomography (CT) scan uses X-rays to make detailed pictures of structures inside of the body. During the test, you will lie on a table that is attached to the CT scanner, which is a large doughnut-shaped machine. The CT scanner sends X-rays through the body area being studied. A CT scan can be used to study all parts of your body, such as the chest, abdomen, pelvis, or an arm or leg. It can take pictures of body organs, such as the brain, liver, pancreas, intestines, kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, lungs, and heart. It also can study blood vessels, bones, and the spinal cord.

RADIOTHERAPY

External beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is the most common form of radiotherapy. The patient lies on a couch and an external source of radiation is pointed at a particular part of the body. Beams are generated outside the patient and are targeted at the tumor site. These high energy x-rays can deposit their dose to the area of the tumor to destroy the cancer cells and, with careful treatment planning, spare the surrounding normal tissues.

Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT: KV, CBCT) is the process of frequent two and three-dimensional imaging, during a course of radiation treatment, used to direct radiation therapy utilizing the imaging coordinates of the actual radiation treatment plan. The patient is localized in the treatment room in the same position as planned from the reference imaging dataset.

TELEMEDICINE

Telemedicine, also referred to as telehealth or e-medicine, is the remote delivery of care, including exams and consultations, via telecommunications. Telemedicine allows our team to provide care at a distance. Patients can speak with our physicians from any location using any device that has a camera and internet connection. A typical exam involves connecting face to face with our providers online; services may also be provided over the phone.

Telemedicine is utilized to reduce barriers to care, such as travel and time away from work.
